Joy To The World ~ A Christmas Story, Part 6 {FINALE}

If you need a refresher: Part 1, Part 2, Part 3, Part 4, Part 5

And now for part six, the very last part! 🙂

“It’s dessert time!” Polby cried once they were all assembled in the party room again. “Coooookies!”

IMG_8462

Dessert was served. The plates, napkins, and cups were stacked one one side of the table.

IMG_8463

There was a platter of delicious cookies in three kinds: peanut butter, chocolate chip, and frosted sugar. They were all gone pretty fast!

IMG_8468

There was also a huge bowl of colorfully wrapped chocolates, as well as a gingerbread house and a few pastries and pies.

IMG_8471

Hummus was unwrapping and raving over one of the pieces of chocolate.

IMG_8472

Mimi was daintily nibbling at a chocolate chip cookie.

IMG_8473

Baby had a pink sugar cookie in one hand and a napkin in the other.

IMG_8474

And Bunny Baby was daring Toto to juggle two cups. Toto, for the sake of honor, did so: much to everyone’s fright.

IMG_8478

Once everyone had finished their desserts, the TV was brought in. All the stuffed animals clustered around the TV excitedly. The yearly Christmas tradition was that after opening presents, a Christmas movie would be watched.

IMG_8479

This year, everyone unanimously agreed to watch one of their classic favorites: It’s A Wonderful Life, starring James Stewart as George Bailey. The movie lasted about two hours, and everyone was engrossed.

The storyline was full of emotional ups and downs, making them laugh and cry depending on the situation.

IMG_8482

Once the movie was over, everyone stretched their legs. Some people scampered to the kitchen and got ice cream in glass cups as an after-movie treat.

IMG_8483

“Alright, peoples!” Huggies, as designated captain of the family, was always the one to make announcements. He cleared his throat. “If y’all were here last year, you’ll remember our caroling tradition. This year we’re doing it again, and all of you get to pick songs!”

IMG_8484

Hymnbooks were passed around for those who needed and requested them.

“Do I get to pick the first song?” Cupcake pleaded. Nobody put up much fuss to this, so Huggies said “okay.”

“Let’s start out with something merry,” she suggested, setting the mood with a merry smile. “Hark The Herald Angels Sing.”

IMG_8485

Cherry, who possessed a great talent for singing and had perfect pitch on top of that, struck up the tune.

Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King;
Peace on earth and mercy mild,
God and sinners reconciled:
Joyful all ye nations rise,
Join the triumph of the skies,
With the angelic host proclaim,
Christ is born in Bethlehem:
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King.

Christ, by highest heaven adored,
Christ, the everlasting Lord,
Late in time behold him come,
Offspring of a virgin’s womb!
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see,
Hail the incarnate Deity!
Pleased as man with men to dwell,
Jesus, our Emmanuel:
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King.

Hail the heaven-born Prince of Peace!
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!
Light and life to all he brings,
Risen with healing in his wings;
Mild, he lays his glory by,
Born that man no more may die,
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth:
Hark! the herald angels sing
Glory to the newborn King.

IMG_8487

The stuffies’ voices combined into a melodious, perfect harmony that enveloped the room with its sweetness. There was the perfect soprano of Cherry and Mimsy’s voices, the sweet clarity of Mimi’s, the quirky improvisations of Dwuff’s, the soft alto undertone of Bera-Bera’s, the mellow tenor of Woot-Woot’s, and the deep bass of Dejected Dog’s…

The song ended on a long note which they all were reluctant to end. So they held it for a long time: three voices, one melody and two harmonies. And then gradually, more and more people let go until Polby’s strong voice was the only one heard, and then even he stopped.

“More hymn suggestions?” Huggies looked around.

IMG_8489

“I think Kenzie and Brookie have one they want.” Baby mischievously nudged Kenzie. She promptly suggested Angels We Have Heard On High, and that was sung. Then Hummus wanted God Bless Ye Merry Gentlemen, and next, Cornell suggested The First Noel.

IMG_8490

On and on, through five more hymns, and nobody wanted to stop. So Owly brought up O Little Town Of Bethlehem. This time, Huggies began, his voice ringing clearly as everyone else joined in.

IMG_8492

O little town of Bethlehem,
how still we see thee lie;
above thy deep and dreamless sleep
the silent stars go by.
Yet in thy dark streets shineth
the everlasting light;
the hopes and fears of all the years
are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary,
and gathered all above,
while mortals sleep, the angels keep
their watch of wondering love.
O morning stars together,
proclaim the holy birth,
and praises sing to God the king,
and peace to all on earth!

How silently, how silently,
the wondrous gift is given;
so God imparts to human hearts
the blessings of his heaven.
No ear may hear his coming,
but in this world of sin,
where meek souls will receive him, still
the dear Christ enters in.

O holy Child of Bethlehem,
descend to us, we pray;
cast out our sin, and enter in,
be born in us today.
We hear the Christmas angels
the great glad tidings tell;
o come to us, abide with us,
our Lord Emmanuel!

IMG_8493

“I can’t believe you guys forgot What Child Is This?” Dejected Dog said with great contempt once the song was over.

“We didn’t forget,” interjected an indignant Ranch. “We just delayed.” And to prove himself, he went and began the tune of What Child Is This?

IMG_8497

What Child is this who, laid to rest
On Mary’s lap is sleeping?
Whom Angels greet with anthems sweet,
While shepherds watch are keeping?

This, this is Christ the King,
Whom shepherds guard and Angels sing;
Haste, haste, to bring Him laud,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

Why lies He in such mean estate,
Where ox and ass are feeding?
Good Christians, fear, for sinners here
The silent Word is pleading.

Nails, spear shall pierce Him through,
The cross be borne for me, for you.
Hail, hail the Word made flesh,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

So bring Him incense, gold and myrrh,
Come peasant, king to own Him;
The King of kings salvation brings,
Let loving hearts enthrone Him.

Raise, raise a song on high,
The virgin sings her lullaby.
Joy, joy for Christ is born,
The Babe, the Son of Mary.

IMG_8498

“It’s 10 PM,” said Huggies suddenly, looking down at his watch. “I’m afraid we only have time for one more song, and then the party’s over. Who would like to suggest the last–“

“Me, ’cause I’m awesomest,” declared Dwuff cheerfully.

“Me, because I’m oldest,” drawled Dejected Dog.

“Me, because I’m youngest!” piped Bunny Baby.

“Me, because I’m the family favorite.” Polby was quick to contradict everyone.

Hummus laughed. “say we settle the argument by all agreeing that I get to choose it. I was the first in the stuffed animal collection.”

This caused a slight wrestling match between him and Ranch, which Ranch won in a heartbeat. “Now, you see that I get to choose the last song,” he was beginning to say, when Huggies interrupted.

“No, no, no,” he cut in with a laugh. “Mimi gets to choose. She’s the newest.”

IMG_8502

Mimi looked pleased, and wasted no time in deciding on a song. “I always like to end a party with something uplifting. Let’s do Joy To The World!”

IMG_8503

And so they did, with one song and one voice. And as they rumbled out the familiar tunes with hearty fervor, they all looked around the room, and marveled, and remembered, and hoped, and dreamed.

IMG_8504

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,

IMG_8505

And heav’n and nature sing,
And heav’n and nature sing,
And heav’n, and heav’n, and nature sing.

IMG_8507

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains

IMG_8508

Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

IMG_8509

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow

IMG_8510

Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

IMG_8511

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,

IMG_8512

And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

IMG_8514

That last note rang far into the night with majesty, and passion, and…joy.

IMG_8515

And just like that, the Christmas 2017 party was over.

IMG_8517

Bunny Baby and Strawberry were only five, and thus they were exhausted as it was already past 10 PM. But they were still crazy enough to pose for this goofy picture before going off to bed.

IMG_8518

Smiling, and linking hands from across the space between their beds, the two little tots drifted into sweet dreams.

IMG_8524

Mimsy and Cherry lay in bed, recalling the events of the day.

“I can’t remember a day anything like this one,” Mimsy whispered.

“It has been wonderful,” Cherry agreed.

IMG_8528

And judging from the happy prayer that she thought out before falling asleep, Mimi Carmichael felt the same way:

Dear God, I love my new family. They’re just so crazy and happy and fun to be with. i was unhappy and pessimistic before I came here, I thought I’d be tossed onto another shelf with another loud and boring family and that I would spend Christmas moping in my room, but that certainly didn’t come true.

IMG_8530

Kenzie was snoring soundly in the bed she shared with Brookie, but Brookie remained awake. The last thought she had before falling asleep was short, sweet, and simple:

What a wonderful day it’s been!

And throughout everyone’s dreams that night were the lyrics of the beautiful hymn:

Joy to the world, the Lord is come!
Let earth receive her King;
Let every heart prepare Him room,
And heav’n and nature sing,
And heav’n and nature sing,
And heav’n, and heav’n, and nature sing.

Joy to the earth, the Savior reigns!
Let men their songs employ;
While fields and floods, rocks, hills, and plains
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat the sounding joy,
Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

No more let sins and sorrows grow,
Nor thorns infest the ground;
He comes to make His blessings flow
Far as the curse is found,
Far as the curse is found,
Far as, far as, the curse is found.

He rules the world with truth and grace,
And makes the nations prove
The glories of His righteousness,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders of His love,
And wonders, wonders, of His love.

THE END
